What Is the Value of Knowing Your Muscle Health Score?

Knowing your muscle health score is essential for maintaining strength, mobility, and wellness as you age. Muscle health declines over time due to sarcopenia, the natural loss of muscle mass, which impacts balance, endurance, and daily activities.

This test reveals if your muscle quality is within a healthy range and lets you track changes over time. Your OneUp Fitness trainer can then tailor exercise, diet, and recovery plans to your needs.

This is the only test of its kind, developed by Halifax’s Myomar Molecular at Dalhousie University, providing unique insights into your muscle health.

How Does Testing Work?

Our muscle health testing offers a comprehensive view of your muscle tissue’s quality and health. The process is simple and insightful:

The insights from your testing are used to tailor your fitness plan so that you’re on the best path to achieving strong, resilient muscles.

Who Is the Muscle Health Test For?

Muscle health testing at OneUp Fitness is designed for anyone over 40 who wants to improve and maintain their physical health, independence, and strength as they age. It’s especially valuable for:

Our Recommendations

We recommend starting with a baseline assessment as soon as you begin a resistance training program, make significant lifestyle changes—such as a new sleep routine or diet—or recover from an injury or surgery. This initial test provides a valuable baseline, offering insight into your current muscle quality and allowing us to measure your progress accurately over time.

For clients with lower muscle quality scores, we suggest retesting every 6 months following the initial measurement to track improvements. For those with a healthy muscle score, an annual test is recommended to monitor and maintain this level of muscle health.

Keep in mind that positive changes in muscle quality can often be detected in as little as 2 weeks.

Monitoring Your Muscle Health Is Important

Healthy muscle is a cornerstone of healthy aging. Research shows that many metabolic conditions and diseases are directly tied to both muscle quantity and quality. The healthier your muscles, the better your overall health and the lower your risk for conditions like Type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Muscle health is more than just strength; it supports metabolic functions that protect against disease and help maintain resilience as you age.

Beyond health, muscle condition also plays a crucial role in physical performance. Whether you’re looking to boost your athletic abilities, improve your daily walk time, or handle household tasks like gardening and yard work with ease and reduced risk of injury, understanding your muscle health can be transformative. A muscle health score provides insight into your current state and helps guide you toward achieving personal fitness and mobility goals.
