…currently no treatment besides exercise.”

Researchers from Ontario’s McMaster University have discovered that an enzyme called AMPK (for short) is crucial to slowing muscle wasting during aging. As we get older AMPK is ‘dialed’ down, which the authors speculate may have a grand impact on muscle wasting. The research team’s previous work has shown that exercise contributes in the production of the all important enzyme.

I found it funny when they state “despite the importance of maintaining muscle function and strength as we age, there is currently no treatment besides exercise”.  (Aww, do I have to exercise? Can’t I just take a pill?)

If you’re not strength training, it’s never too late to start.
