Do What You Love: Balloon Safari

A hot air balloon.

Candace and I love to travel. We want to see the world and everything it has to offer–it’s our thing. During our travels we’ve snorkelled, hiked on volcanoes, swam with sharks, rays and dolphins, zip lined, kayaked, rock climbed, canoed, paddle boarded, ran through the jungle with capuchin monkeys, and climbed a mountain, just to name a few things. I’m fairly certain that our physical fitness has made all of those things not only achievable, but all the more enjoyable.

I wanted to share some footage from our amazing hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti back in 2013. I will apologize in advance for the shaky camera work. It wasn’t the best camera and I was not the most skilled videographer at the time. I hope you enjoy it none-the-less.

Balloon Safari

If you’ve ever flown for close to 20 hours, then driven on an unpaved road in the desert for another 6 hours, lugging baggage around and sleeping on the desert floor, you know it is quite a gruelling trek. While I don’t necessarily believe being healthy and fit is an absolute requirement for a safari, or long treks, it certainly makes this type of adventure less burdensome and therefore much more enjoyable. Being fit gives us more options when we travel. If we decide to tackle something new, we have the confidence that we can give it a good go. Strength and fitness ends up being a great insurance plan in case something goes wrong. I believe strength is the core to our physical independence.

Strength training doesn’t just benefit the obvious physical activities and sports, I believe it improves all facets of life. It gives you options, confidence and freedom. Strength helps to prevent physical ailments and conditions in life that we so often chalk up to old age. I’m living proof that one or two hard strength training sessions per week, taking no more than 30 minutes per session, is all that is required. It is such an easy and sustainable way to achieve strength and fitness.

Everyone’s motivation will be different. Whether it’s playing with your children or grandchildren, improving your balance and stability, enhancing travel experience, or boosting confidence, bone health or mental health. Whatever it is that you enjoy, there are plenty of great reasons to strength train.

Health and travel is our reason. What’s yours?
