Create Lasting Change in 2023: Habits vs Goals

"You don't rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems."

Most people struggle with making lasting change in their lives. Maybe it’s the idea society gives us that we must go big or go home; all in or all out! But it really doesn’t have to be that way. Below, you will find some interesting recommendations and a different way of structuring change in your life from the author of Atomic Habits, James Clear.

  1. Rather than setting goals, ask yourself the following questions: What kind of person you would like to be? What kinds of actions / habits would that kind of person do? For example, "I am a fit person." For you, that may mean lifting weights 3 times per week. Rather than, "I am going to double my strength in 2 months’ time.

  2. Habits should be small and easy to do, especially in the beginning.

  3. Layer habits on top of one another like units of a larger system.

  4. Collectively and consistently over time those small, layered habits can create large meaningful results.

"In order for you to feel aligned with your actions, you have to genuinely believe the story about yourself. You can start 'proving it to yourself' by taking those small actions consistently over time."

Working with a personal trainer is the best way to instill a new fitness habit because it creates accountability which helps to create consistency - and consistency is the cornerstone of creating habits.
